Soldiers in Georgia face DUI charges

Two American military personnel are under fire after allegedly ramming a truck into a home while under the influence of alcohol. The two men, based on Fort Stewart, are facing Georgia DUI charges in connection with the incident. If they are found guilty of these charges, their careers in the military could be placed in jeopardy and they may face jail time.

According to witness statements and a Georgia police report, the two male soldiers, aged 19 and 20, were traveling in a pickup truck the night of Jan. 20. The report specifies the 19-year-old was behind the wheel and driving at a reckless pace when he appeared to lose control of the vehicle. The truck narrowly missed several homes before smashing through a mailbox and into a third house. Thankfully, no one was injured in the impact.

The driver was seen attempting to flee the scene on foot, while his passenger allegedly attempted to enter the driver's seat and speed away. Officers arriving on the scene arrested both men, though it is unclear what steps were taken to determine their levels of sobriety. The younger soldier faces charges of DUI, obstruction of justice and fleeing the scene, while his passenger also faces DUI charges in addition to obstruction of justice.

DUI charges filed against anyone in Georgia can be very serious, but this is particularly true for two young men at the beginning of a military career. A guilty verdict in this case could destroy their chances at an otherwise fulfilling career trajectory. This is why state law demands that prosecutors provide evidence that proves beyond a reasonable doubt the men were driving drunk at the time of the alleged crime. Defense counsel will work to formulate a strong defense while also exploring the possibility of negotiating a plea agreement if circumstances warrant that approach.
