Woman in Georgia faces DUI charges

A woman from Canton who is accused of causing a 2017 crash that killed a 21-year-old man is being indicted on several charges. Georgia authorities in Cherokee County filed vehicular homicide and DUI charges against the woman for her alleged role in this tragedy. She was scheduled for arraignment on March 7 in Cherokee County.

According to the local sheriff's office, deputies responded to reports of a crash on Hickory Flat Highway around 7:30pm the evening of March 10, 2017. It appeared that a vehicle driven by the accused woman was traveling westbound when it crossed the center line. This resulted in a head-on collision with the vehicle driven by the 21-year-old victim.

The force of the impact caused the man's car to cross the center line back into the westbound lanes, where it was struck by two more vehicles. The man was pronounced dead, and all vehicles involved were badly damaged. Thankfully, there were no further injuries, but the woman is believed to have been distracted by her cell phone and also under the influence of several medications that are known to cause slow reaction time and impairment.

DUI charges are not just reserved for those suspected of driving drunk, as some legal prescription medications can produce similar effects. However, in order for her to be found guilty of these charges, Georgia prosecutors will have to prove that she took these medications with a full understanding of how they may affect her. If, for example, she had an unforeseen reaction to the drugs, her defense representation may be able to argue convincingly against the DUI charges filed against her.
